Naravni prehod med Miljskimi hribi na zahodu in Tinjanom na vzhodu so izkoristili tudi Rimljani, saj so skozenj speljali Vio Flavio. V anti\u010dnih \u010dasih je bil bolj pomemben ka\u0161telir pri Jelarjih in za \u010dasa Rimljanov utrjeno naselje Jelarji, od kjer so nadzorovali cesto v dolini. A \u0160kofije so se zaradi vedno ve\u010djega prometa hitro razvile ob cesti, \u0161e bolj, ko je bila, za \u010dasa Avstro Ogrske skozi vas speljana Istrska ozkotirna \u017eeleznica. Prvotno naselje danes imenujemo Spodnje \u0160kofije. Srednje in Zgornje \u0160kofije so za\u010dele nastajati po letu1700, prej je bil ta predel obdelan od kolonov veleposestnikov. Ker je bilo prevozni\u0161tvo in drugi poklici povezani s prometom vedno bolj donosno, so se kmetije kolonov spreminjale in nastajala je dolga vas od spodnjih do zgornjih \u0160kofij. Kmetov je bilo vedno manj. Po letu 1900 so v \u0160kofijah dobili \u0161olo, ki je imela tudi dva razreda s poukom v slovenskem jeziku, a z okupacijo Italije so kmalu slovenski jezik v \u0161olah prepovedali.<\/p>\n\n\n<style> #grid-gallery-3-76383 .hi-icon-effect-5d .hi-icon { color:#ffffff !important;
