Glavni razlog za njegovo enormno pove\u010danje ob prehodu iz 19. v dvajseto stoletje je predvsem hitra rast mesta Trst in njegove potrebe po kmetijskih pridelkih. Drugi razlog pa je uvedba parnikov na tej relaciji. Pred njimi so plule ve\u010dinoma bracere, ki pa so bile odvisne od vetra in so lahko naredile samo eno pot dnevno, do\u010dim so parniki pluli v enem dnevu tudi 4 krat. Tretji razlog pa je padec <a><\/a>cen prevoza. Ko se je pojavil prvi parnik leta 1868 je do Trsta vozil eno uro in pol za 10 \u0161oldov (tretji razred) do\u010dim je takratni &#8220;avtobus&#8221; &#8211; ko\u010dija potrebovala skoraj tri ure in je stala 80 \u0161oldov. Kasneje so modernej\u0161i parniki potrebovali do Trsta samo tri\u010detrt ure, cene pa so zaradi konkurence ostale iste. To je bila motorna ladja Egida, narejena v Kopru, v \u0161kveru Depangher s kapaciteto 100 potnikov.
